I went into this season trying my hardest to be optimistic. I agree the defense is greatly improved, and hopefully shots will continue to stay low.

The offense needs production out of their top six and I asume that those six know it, however for guys like Horton,Weiss and Olesz, it's time to start producing.

If this inconsistency continues then I can only hope that when they trade Bouwmeester that a scoring forward is added!

As a Leafs fan, I can relate to the issue of having too many 3rd and 4th line players in your line up.

Unfortunately though, I think a dose of reality is necessary. The Panthers (like the Leafs) are going to struggle to score goals all season. In fact, if the Panthers are likely to improve anywhere, it's defensively.

Despite what your impression seems to be, it could very well be argued that the real problem in Florida for a long time, has been a horrible lack of defensive awareness. The team has regularly given up far more shots on net than most of the rest of the NHL, and they addressed their defensive problems in the off season by trading Jokinen for Boynton and Ballard.

In the short term it does hurt the offensive production, but defensively it improves the team greatly. Successful clubs in the NHL play solid D. Scoring is nice, but it's a luxury for a low-to-mid level team.

Expect a lot of low scoring affairs with a focus on Defensive detail to predominate.

I'm expecting the same from the Leafs, and I suppose being pleased with any inroads they make is a start.

At this point the reports are that Weiss and Booth have minor injuries. They are both game time decisions at this point, therfore Frolik will stay until that's determined.
It was made official that Stewart has made the team.

[...] Does McCabe make Panthers better? With the addition of McCabe, Keith Ballard and Nick Boynton, the Panthers defense is pretty solid. If Jay Bouwmeester stays, and grows to the next level, this is a pretty good unit. Let’s not forget Bryan Allen as well. … [...]

There's no doubt Florida got the better end of the deal here. I think the main reason he was so reviled in Toronto was because of a few high-profile bonehead plays in his own zone. Like A-Rod for the Yankees, fans think that being paid so much money means that you can play amazingly every night and don't make any mistakes.

Personally, I don't think it's enough to get Florida into the playoffs. With Jokinen gone, I think you guys will be really hurting for goals, even if Weiss and Horton step up.

Just a comment on McCabe's contract. Although he is a $5.75MM cap hit, after the bonus is paid on Sept. 1, his annual salary falls to $4.15MM. For teams that aren't up against the cap, that's a pretty decent rate for a top pairing, quality offensive defenseman.

I also don't think McCabe's defense is nearly as bad as is made out by the Toronto media. Just look at the team's performance with him in and out of the lineup for an idea of his actual worth. I think a straight up trade McCabe for Van Ryn would be a pretty big win for Florida, but given how much the current GM seems to want to get rid of McCabe, I can see it potentially happening.

The benefit of landing JBo early is your team gets a 50 game try-out, and if he doesn't fit in, or won't sign an extention, he could command a nice return at the deadline, covering you loss for the trade.
